Challenger Pro League betting: all about Belgium's second tier

Fifteen clubs, thirty rounds and a single automatic promotion spot: the Challenger Pro League looks different in 2026-27. The former D1B, renamed in 2022, gets less attention than the top flight, but it brings together former top-division sides, two clubs promoted from amateur football and four U23 teams from leading clubs, which makes it a league that needs reading on its own terms.

For Challenger Pro League betting, that mix matters as much as the table. Here is what the new format changes, what sets the Belgian second division apart from the other competitions in our range for betting on Belgian football, and which markets are open for every round of fixtures.

Challenger Pro League 2026-27: a tighter format

Last season, seventeen clubs competed for two automatic promotion places, while the sides finishing third to sixth went into play-offs. Beveren won the title with 88 points, Kortrijk finished second, and Lommel won promotion via the play-offs and a promotion decider. Those three departures largely explains why the division is smaller.

Only Dender came down from the top flight. From amateur football came Virton and Hasselt, champions of their respective leagues, while Olympic Charleroi, who finished bottom, and RWDM, refused a professional licence, left the division. The result: fifteen clubs, thirty rounds and one club sitting out each round. Fittingly, the season opened on 14 August with a meeting of two newcomers, Hasselt v Dender.

The promotion rules changed with it. The side that tops the regular season goes straight up. The teams finishing second to fifth contest promotion play-offs over two legs, with the higher-placed side at home in the second leg, and only the winner reaches the top flight. At the bottom, the clubs in fourteenth and fifteenth drop into amateur football. And every summer, the second tier will take in the bottom two of the top flight, relegated directly with no play-off. Pro League betting therefore follows a different logic: in the top flight, eighteen clubs chase the title with no play-offs at all.

Reading the Belgian second division table in points per game

With fifteen clubs, one of them does not play in each round. The raw table therefore often compares sides that have played a different number of games. After seven rounds (table as of 21 October), Beerschot and Dender had 18 points from seven matches, Eupen 15 from only six: at the same rate, the Pandas were keeping pace with the two leaders.

The bye also affects freshness. A club coming off a week without a game starts the next round with a rested squad, while its opponent may have just played an away game and a cup tie back to back. When checking the odds before kick-off, comparing points per game and each team's recent schedule is more reliable than trusting a misleading league position.

U23 sides in the Challenger Pro League

Since the 2022-23 season, four reserve teams from top-flight clubs have taken part: Club NXT for Club Brugge, Jong Genk, RSCA Futures for Anderlecht and Jong KAA Gent. They cannot be promoted to the top flight, which keeps them out of the promotion race wherever they finish.

Their status changed this summer. The U23 quotas were scrapped, a decision that follows a recommendation from the Belgian Competition Authority: a reserve side in a relegation place now goes down like any other club. RSCA Futures, bottom after seven rounds with a single point, are directly affected.

For bettors, these teams remain the hardest to read. Their line-ups depend on the needs of the parent club: a player called up to the first team, or a senior player dropping down to regain match fitness, is enough to change the shape of a game. Checking the announced line-ups before you bet pays off here more than elsewhere.

On-demand video review: unique to Belgium's second tier

The league does not use VAR. With FIFA's authorisation, it is trialling Football Video Support this season: each head coach has two challenges per match to ask the referee to review an incident. Four situations qualify: goals, penalty incidents, straight red cards and a card shown to the wrong player. The referee watches the footage himself at the side of the pitch.

A lost challenge is taken away from the coach, a successful one is returned. These stoppages have no time limit, and the system divides opinion: RFC Liège coach Gaetan Englebert considers the number of cameras in some stadiums too low, while Francs Borains coach Yves Vanderhaeghe sees it as a tool that has to be learned. For anyone following a game live, a penalty or a sending-off can still be overturned several minutes after the incident.

Bet on the Challenger Pro League: the markets for every round

Every match is open for betting before kick-off, with a core set of markets: match winner, double chance, draw no bet, handicap, total goals, both teams to score and first-half result, plus more than eighty additional markets. Several selections can be combined on one slip, and Opti Odds, which gives you boosted accumulator odds, also applies to second-tier games: for a slip of three to eight selections, on those at odds of 1.60 or more.

All matches are shown on the DAZN app until 2030, and one game is broadcast every Friday evening on the DAZN Pro League 2 channel. When betting live on the second tier, video review adds a factor unique to this league: a penalty awarded and then cancelled after a challenge moves the odds twice within a few minutes.

This season's promotion contenders

Relegated from the top flight, Dender were tipped as promotion contenders, and they share top spot with Beerschot after seven rounds. The Antwerp club, third in the regular season last year, also made headlines in the Croky Cup, knocking out Anderlecht in the round of 32 (2-1). Behind them, Eupen, Francs Borains and Hasselt, promoted from amateur football, are separated by a few points. At the bottom, RSCA Futures and Seraing occupy the two relegation places.

With only one automatic promotion spot, the gap between first place and the play-offs matters more than ever. The play-offs are still a genuine way up, though: last season Lommel, fifth in the regular season, won promotion by that route. Head-to-head games between the top five carry extra weight over the thirty rounds, and that is where the odds are tightest. You will find them all at GoldenVegas Sport, with a spending limit set before the round and stuck to, whatever happens on the pitch.

Common questions before you bet

How many clubs go up from the second tier in 2026-27?

Two: the regular-season winner goes up automatically, followed by the winner of the promotion play-offs between the sides finishing second to fifth.

Can a U23 side be promoted to the top flight?

No. A reserve side can finish high up the table, but it cannot be promoted to the top flight.

Where can I watch second-tier matches?

On the DAZN app, which shows every game until 2030. One match each Friday is also shown on the DAZN Pro League 2 channel, available on Proximus, Telenet and Orange.

What happens to the bottom two?

The clubs in fourteenth and fifteenth drop into amateur football, even if one is a U23 side, now that the quotas have been scrapped.
