Betting on the Jupiler Pro League: the 2026-27 season without play-offs

For seventeen years the end of the Belgian season was played separately. Points were gathered from August to March, then halved, and a handful of clubs started again from almost nothing. That era is over: since 7 August 2026 the Jupiler Pro League has run with eighteen clubs across thirty-four matchdays, home and away, and the champion is whoever finishes top. Nothing else.

This is not a rule tweak, it is a change of rhythm for anyone following the league closely. This page sets out what the new format actually changes, which eighteen clubs are involved and which three came up, the fixtures that shape the season, and how to follow all of it at GoldenVegas Sport. The slip types themselves — single, multiple, system, opti-odds, BetBuilder — are covered on the page about football betting in Belgium.

What the end of the play-offs changes for Jupiler Pro League betting

Under the old format a defeat in November counted for little: halving the points brought everyone back within range in the spring. That safety net is gone. Every matchday now feeds directly into the title race, the four European places and the relegation fight, from the first weekend to the last.

Two consequences for analysis. First, points taken off the bottom half are worth exactly as much as points ground out in a top-of-the-table clash, which was not the case when only the leading sides reached the play-offs. Second, the stakes no longer pile up into a drawn-out May: the bottom two go down automatically, there is no relegation decider, and a club safe by early spring approaches its closing fixtures differently.

The calendar has shifted too. The season started a week later than usual because of the World Cup, the winter break runs to fourteen days, and clubs in European competition may postpone up to three fixtures across the campaign.

Eighteen clubs, three promoted

Club Brugge defend their title, and the way they won it illustrates precisely what the new format removes: Union Saint-Gilloise had finished the regular phase top, before Brugge turned things round over the play-offs. That scenario is no longer possible — there is no second phase left to overturn a table built across thirty-four matchdays. The two clubs met again in the Super Cup in late July, where Union took their revenge, and the league opened on 7 August at the Jan Breydel between the champions and one of the promoted sides.

Three clubs came up, each by a different route:

  • Beveren, Challenger Pro League champions, back in the top flight five years after leaving it;
  • Kortrijk, second in the second tier, returning immediately after a single season below;
  • Lommel, through the promotion play-offs and then a decider won against Dender, after eight seasons in the second division.

Dender were the only side relegated last season: expanding from sixteen to eighteen clubs absorbed the rest. The regulars fill out the field — Anderlecht, Antwerp, Cercle Brugge, Gent, Genk, Standard Liège, Mechelen, OH Leuven, Sint-Truiden, Charleroi, Westerlo, Zulte Waregem and RAAL La Louvière.

The fixtures that shape a Belgian season

The Clasico between Standard Liège and Anderlecht remains the most loaded fixture on the Belgian calendar. The Bruges derby, between Club and Cercle, and the Walloon clash between Charleroi and Standard carry their own intensity, often disconnected from where either side sits in the table on the day.

These are precisely the games where pre-match odds hold up least well. A struggling side hosting its historic rival does not behave as it did the previous weekend, and these are also the matches where live odds move fastest. Under the single-phase format these fixtures are played exactly twice a season, without the third or fourth meeting the play-offs sometimes added.

The Belgian Cup slots into that calendar with a logic of its own. Sixteen of the eighteen top-flight clubs enter at the round of 32 — Lommel and Kortrijk start a round earlier — and both the round of 32 and the round of 16 are played at weekends. The final has moved to after the last league matchday, on 30 May 2027. For a club competing on both fronts that creates congested weeks, which weigh on rotation and therefore on how you read a league game played three days after a cup tie.

What to bet on across thirty-four Jupiler Pro League matchdays

Beyond the result, the Pro League lends itself well to markets around goalscorers, the number of goals, the half in which they arrive, or the correct score. Long-term bets in particular regain their interest under the single-phase format: picking the champion, the first side down or the leading assist provider across thirty-four matchdays rests on a consistency that reads more clearly than it did with a final phase reshuffling the deck.

Market depth varies by fixture. A Club Brugge – Anderlecht opens up considerably more than a game between two promoted sides, which matters mainly if you are building your own bet from several markets in the same match.</p>

Jupiler Pro League odds and following the action live

After a season in which coverage ran almost exclusively through the rights holder's app, the league is back on Proximus, Orange-VOO and Telenet through two dedicated channels. Alongside that, live streaming lets you follow some of the fixtures directly on the site — which spares you betting in-play on a game where all you can see is the score and the clock.

Betting on the Jupiler Pro League online or in a shop

GoldenVegas Sport operates under licence FA+117223, issued by the Belgian Gaming Commission, and offers the Pro League both online and across its betting shops around Belgium. The framework is identical either way: you must be 21 and not listed on the EPIS register.

A word on those derbies. They are the games where attachment to a club weighs heaviest on a staking decision, and where it is easiest to drift past the budget you set before kick-off. Limit-setting and self-exclusion tools are gathered on the responsible gaming page.

Frequently asked questions

How many matchdays are there in 2026-27?

Thirty-four, for eighteen clubs meeting twice. The season runs from 7 August 2026 to late May 2027.

Why were the play-offs scrapped?

The professional clubs voted for it at a general assembly. The reasons the Pro League gave: fewer matches and therefore more flexibility for sides in European competition, an equal number of meetings between every team, and a demand for stability from the smaller clubs.

How many clubs qualify for Europe?

The top four in the final table. The bottom two are relegated to the Challenger Pro League, with no play-off.

Who gets relegated from the Jupiler Pro League?

The bottom two in the final table go straight down a division, with no play-off. Scrapping the play-offs also did away with the relegation round that used to decide survival.

The Pro League gains in readability what it gives up in manufactured suspense. Thirty-four matchdays where everything counts equally makes for a league that is easier to read over time — provided you follow how consistently teams perform rather than the weight of their name. You can follow all thirty-four matchdays in the same place as our full range of sports betting in Belgium, on desktop and on mobile.
