Betting on Serie A: thirty-eight matchdays in a league that shuts down

Serie A is the league where the fewest goals are scored. The 2025-26 season closed on 922 goals from 380 fixtures, or 2.43 a match — the lowest total of recent years. Its leading scorer, Lautaro Martínez, finished on 17, eight fewer than the previous season's winner.

That is not a decorative statistic. It is the factor that ought to shape how you approach every Italian fixture, and it is what this page works through: what a closed game does to the markets, how the season is built, and why a third of the league also plays on Tuesdays.

The most closed league in Europe

Set side by side, the numbers speak plainly. The Eredivisie produced 3.18 goals a game last season; Serie A, 2.43. Three-quarters of a goal per match between them, over the same period, separating two leagues that sit at opposite ends of the risk scale.

The practical consequence comes down to one figure: the line at two and a half. That is where most goals markets are built, and it is crossed less often in Italy than elsewhere. On an average Italian fixture, under 2.5 is a good deal less unlikely than habits picked up on other leagues would suggest.

That tightness has a long tactical explanation. Italian football built its culture on defensive organisation, and even attack-minded sides go into matches with a caution you rarely see in the Netherlands or Germany. A goalless draw is never an oddity there, and a meeting between two sides near the top ends on a single goal more often than in a shoot-out.

Two words of caution all the same. The average hides considerable spread between teams — some concede plenty and score plenty, others shut everything down. And a league average tells you nothing about one particular fixture: it sets the frame, not the answer.

Twenty clubs, thirty-eight matchdays

The 125th edition puts twenty clubs across thirty-eight matchdays, each meeting all the others twice, home and away. It is the classic format, and also the longest of the leagues we cover in depth: four matchdays more than the Jupiler Pro League or the Eredivisie, which run eighteen sides.

The season opened on the weekend of 22 and 23 August 2026 and runs to 30 May 2027, a week later than usual. Inter Milan defend their title, the twenty-first in the club's history, sealed on 3 May with three matchdays to spare after a home win over Parma.

Three clubs came up from Serie B — Venezia, Frosinone and Monza — replacing Cremonese, Hellas Verona and Pisa. For a bettor those three deserve close attention early on: an Italian promoted side runs into a defensive context Serie B does not prepare them for, and their opening outings are the least well judged on the grid.

Thirty-eight matchdays also means the season is long. A side going through a bad spell in November has far more time to recover than a Jupiler Pro League club, where every fixture carries more weight. Trends take longer to settle there, and longer to turn.

Seven Italian clubs in Europe

Here is the figure people overlook when watching Serie A from Belgium: seven of the twenty clubs are in a European competition this season. Four in the Champions League — Inter, Napoli, Roma and Como — two in the Europa League with AC Milan and Juventus, and Atalanta in the Conference League.

More than a third of the league therefore plays midweek for a good part of the year. No other major European league exposes so high a share of its clubs to that rhythm.

What it changes is very concrete. On the weekend after a European night, Italian line-ups shift more than elsewhere, and Serie A coaches have a reputation for rotating harder than their English counterparts. A side out on Thursday evening rarely starts its Sunday at full strength — while that Sunday's opponent has had a clear week.

The effect cuts both ways. A club with no European commitments hosting a Champions League regular in the middle of the league phase is not in the balance of power the table suggests.

Half the league is playing for something into May

Italy hands out seven European tickets: four for the Champions League, two for the Europa League, one for the Conference League. At the other end of the table, three clubs go down to Serie B.

Ten sides out of twenty therefore have something to defend until the final matchday. That is a high proportion, and it feeds directly into the long-term markets: one particular club's European qualification, or its survival, stays playable very late in the season, whereas the title is often settled earlier — Inter wrapped theirs up with three matchdays left.

It also produces peculiar run-ins. A side already safe hosting a club chasing Europe is not playing the same match as its opponent, and May odds do not read like November odds. The principle holds across every competition open to betting, but it is especially pronounced in a twenty-club league where the stakes spread across that many positions.

Italian fixtures run from Friday evening to Monday evening, spread across several time slots. Few matches are played simultaneously, which is a marked difference from leagues that bunch their fixtures into one kick-off time.
