Betting on the Eredivisie: Dutch football in the 2026-27 season
Some leagues you follow out of habit, others because the numbers actually tell you something. The Eredivisie belongs to the second group: 972 goals in 306 matches last season, an average of 3.18 per game. That kind of figure makes Dutch football readable for a bettor — far more than its reputation as a strikers' paradise ever did.
This page covers what is worth knowing before the 2026-27 campaign: the revised format, the three promoted clubs, the real pecking order that came out of last season, the Belgians playing there, and the markets those characteristics point towards. How the different slip types work is set out on the football betting page — this one deals with the Eredivisie only.
What changes for Eredivisie betting in 2026-27
The league begins its 71st season, running from 7 August 2026 to 23 May 2027, still with eighteen clubs across thirty-four matchdays. The change sits at the bottom of the table: the bottom two go down automatically, and the sixteenth-placed club enters a promotion-relegation play-off. That is worth noting for a Belgian bettor, because the Jupiler Pro League moved in the opposite direction this season and scrapped its play-offs and its relegation decider altogether. Both leagues now share the same basic shape — eighteen clubs, thirty-four matchdays — but not the same end to the season.
Three clubs came up. ADO Den Haag return after five years away, as second-tier champions. Cambuur are back after three seasons. Willem II went up through the play-offs, on penalties against Volendam, after a single year below. They replace Volendam, NAC Breda and Heracles Almelo.
3.18 goals a game: what the figure implies
The figure is not a one-season quirk. In 2024-25 the league finished on 2.99 goals a game. And across the thirty seasons studied between 1994-95 and 2023-24, its average comes out at 3.07 goals per match, the highest of the seven major European leagues examined, ahead of the Bundesliga (2.93) and well ahead of Ligue 1 (2.46). The trait is therefore structural: it comes from the playing style inherited from total football, from the high press most clubs use, and from defensive squads that are often thinner than those of the neighbouring major leagues.
In practice, that shifts the interest away from result markets and towards goals markets. Over and under 2.5 goals, both teams to score and total goals are where Dutch football genuinely stands apart. One caveat, though: bookmakers know that statistic as well as you do, and the prices already reflect it. A high average is not an edge in itself — it only tells you where analysis is most likely to be useful. Which markets are actually open varies from one fixture to the next: check them game by game on the Eredivisie prices and fixtures.
The real pecking order after 2025-26
PSV took the title for the third season running, their 27th Dutch championship, and they did it on 5 April 2026 with five matchdays still to play: the earliest title ever secured by date in the competition's history. The title race, in other words, never really happened.
Behind them the final table is worth a second look, because it does not match the hierarchy most people assume. Feyenoord finished second, but it was NEC who took third place, ahead of Twente. Ajax came only fifth and are playing in the Conference League this season. The Ajax-PSV-Feyenoord trio still shapes the league's history, but it no longer describes the season just gone.
That detail has a direct consequence: trips to well-organised mid-table sides are not formalities for the big clubs, and early-season prices sometimes carry more reputation than current form. Those are precisely the fixtures where reading last season's table pays off.
The Belgians in the Eredivisie
Dutch football has long worked as a springboard for Belgian players, and the summer of 2026 produced the clearest illustration yet. Mika Godts, named the Eredivisie's Talent of the Year after a season of seventeen goals and twelve assists at Ajax, joined Paris Saint-Germain on 16 August for a fee reported at between fifty-five and sixty million euros. The league loses its most decisive Belgian, but the deal says plenty about what the Dutch shop window can be worth to a player brought through in Belgium.
Those who remain hold very different roles, and the distinction matters if you intend to lean on them. At Utrecht, Alonzo Engwanda plays by far the most: the 23-year-old midfielder, an Anderlecht academy product, featured in all thirty-four league games and all eight Europa League fixtures last season. Goalkeeper Jari De Busser, who played all thirty-four matches for Go Ahead Eagles with nine clean sheets, signed a five-year deal at AZ in June — but he arrives into an already crowded goalkeeping order, and his minutes are far from settled. Arno Verschueren, meanwhile, racks up appearances at Twente without establishing himself: most of his outings come late in games.
At Heerenveen, Luca Oyen continues to settle after arriving on a free from Genk in January, alongside Nolhan Courtens, who made his first minutes at this level there.
For a Belgian bettor that is not a footnote: following a player you already know gives you information from the pitch — minutes, tactical role, form — that you simply do not have in a league where you know nobody. You do need to check he is still there, though: this section reflects squads as of 3 September 2026, after the summer window closed, and will be revised at each transfer period.
What to check before an Eredivisie matchday
Recent form is the first instinct, but it reads better across five matches than across two. Home advantage carries real weight in the Eredivisie, where some clubs post sharply contrasting records depending on the ground, a gap that tends to widen in the second half of the season.
Absences matter more here than elsewhere. In a league where squads are shallower than in England or Germany, a key player's injury genuinely changes the look of a team. Then there are the stakes: from March onwards, a club fighting relegation and a mid-table side do not approach the same fixture with the same intensity, and that gap in motivation is not always priced in.
The Eredivisie and in-play betting
The rhythm of Dutch matches suits in-play betting: with more than three goals a game on average, the shape of a match flips often, and a favourite conceding in the first half moves the prices sharply. Some fixtures are also available through live streaming, which spares you reacting to the scoreline alone.
One reminder before you start: betting online in Belgium is open to those aged 21 and over who are not listed on the EPIS register. Limit-setting and self-exclusion tools are gathered on the responsible gaming page. Set your budget before the matchday, not during it. The pace of in-play betting is exactly what makes that rule matter.
Frequently asked questions about Eredivisie betting
Thirty-four matchdays for eighteen clubs, so 306 league fixtures, from August to May.
PSV Eindhoven, champions in 2025-26 for the third season in a row. It was the club's 27th Dutch title.
ADO Den Haag, Cambuur and Willem II, replacing Volendam, NAC Breda and Heracles Almelo.
The 2025-26 season finished on 3.18 goals per match, against 2.99 the season before. Across thirty seasons the league averages 3.07 — the highest of the major European leagues studied.
On the leading fixtures the offering is comparable. On a game between two clubs near the foot of the table it is thinner — which matters mainly if you are putting together a BetBuilder, since that depends on how many markets are open on the match.
The Eredivisie is not the most heavily covered league, but it is one of the best documented statistically, and its geography makes it a natural companion to a Jupiler Pro League weekend. GoldenVegas Sport covers the full Dutch season as a bookmaker licensed in Belgium under FA+117223. No amount of analysis guarantees a return — it simply lets you approach a matchday knowing what you are staking, and use betting sites in Belgium within a regulated framework.
