Conference League: three fixtures of the final matchday not to be missed

It often goes unnoticed. Created in 2021, the UEFA Conference League is not the best-known competition among football fans. In Belgium, Cercle managed last season to reach the round of 16 in relative anonymity.

Very often, Europa League, played on the same day on Thursdays, overshadows this trophy, which could be seen as a longer version of the Intertoto Cup. But as Europe’s second-tier competition is on hold until the end of January, the Conference League gets the spotlight this week.

For the final matchday of the league phase, Golden Vegas Sport wanted to give you an overview of the three best fixtures. Some teams will be playing for qualification, while others will try to avoid elimination and extend their European campaign into the winter.

Strasbourg aiming to finish top

There is no need to oversell this. That is why it is important to point out straight away that these fixtures will not be of the same calibre as those of the Champions League. You will quickly understand this when you realise that Strasbourg currently sit at the top of this Conference League.

The Alsatian side host Breidablik at home. A fixture that is, overall, unbalanced, as bookmakers have clearly understood. The French team are priced at 1.22, while the draw stands at 7 and an Icelandic win at 11.50.

There should be no illusions. The Ligue 1 club are expected to win comfortably, even though they have already secured qualification for the next round. But caution is required: a Breidablik victory could send their opponent into the play-offs. The match is therefore far from meaningless.

Crystal Palace must avoid the worst

Many expected them to cruise through the competition. Surrounded by teams from some of Europe’s most unlikely footballing nations, such as Armenia, Malta or even Gibraltar, a Premier League side was supposed to dominate everything in its path.

Yet Crystal Palace currently sit ninth heading into the final fixture of the calendar year. A position that would virtually send them into the play-offs. Hosting the Finnish side KuPS Kuopio should normally be a formality.

However, the most loyal readers of our blog will tell you otherwise. Surprises are a constant feature in European competitions. Disappointed to have been dropped into the Conference League after initially expecting to play in the Europa League, will the London side get the job done? The pressure is, in any case, at its highest.

Fiorentina must put daily struggles aside

When Florence is mentioned, one first thinks of the iconic city and then of its equally legendary club: Fiorentina. The problem is that La Viola are in serious trouble in Serie A, having yet to win a single match.

The Conference League, where the Italians reached the final in 2024 but were defeated by West Ham, represents a real breath of fresh air. Currently sitting eleventh, David De Gea’s side must make one final effort .

In the absence of Jupiler Pro League clubs this season, these three fixtures will still brighten up your Thursday evening. Especially Fiorentina’s, as several players well known in Belgium have played there in recent years, including Adrien Trebel and Noë Dussenne.
