Champions League 2025–26 : the new format explained
Following the 2024 overhaul, the UEFA Champions League now features 36 clubs in the league phase. Each side plays 8 fixtures against 8 different opponents, drawn by a dedicated seeding system.
The top 8 in the final standings qualify directly for the round of 16. Clubs finishing between 9th and 24th enter a knock-out play-off round. Anyone below 24th is eliminated.
New this season: the league phase standings also determine seedings for the quarter-finals and semi-finals. Higher-ranked sides earn home advantage in the second leg — a significant edge at that stage.
