Most of the money goes on football, yet it is not the sport best suited to betting in play. A goal, a red card, a penalty: the events that genuinely shift a football price can be counted on one hand, and between them the price drifts slowly with the clock.
Tennis works the other way round. The score is rebuilt at every point, and the structure of the game — points, games, sets — means two points can turn a price in seconds. A break, a set point saved, a player reaching for their shoulder: in play, tennis produces constant movement rather than three jolts across ninety minutes.
Table tennis pushes that logic further still, with points following one another in seconds and short sets where a turnaround stays possible to the last. Volleyball shares the same points structure, with sets often decided on two or three rallies.
Basketball sits in a category of its own: the score barely stops moving, so neither does the price, but a gap that settles late in the game is rarely closed. The movement runs continuously while the outcome fixes itself earlier than elsewhere.
Cycling and the endurance sports form the last family: few events, but each one decisive. A breakaway taking two minutes changes everything at a stroke.
What makes a sport readable while it runs
Three criteria emerge from those differences, and they hold for any discipline.
How often meaningful events occur. The more a sport produces, the more often the price is reset, and the more moments arise where your reading of the match and the price on screen diverge far enough to be worth acting on.
How long the breaks last. A sport that stops often — tennis between games, basketball at time-outs — leaves room to decide. A sport that runs without interruption leaves a great deal less.
How reversible the result is. This is the most underrated of the three. In some sports a deficit is pulled back to the final second; in others it is settled long before the end. A price that looks generous ten minutes from time is only generous if the scenario is still open.

Live betting or pre-match: two opposite ways of deciding
A pre-match bet gives you time. You look at the line-ups, the form, the history, you compare, and you decide without pressure. The trade-off is that you decide without anything from the pitch.
In play reverses the equation exactly. You can see whether a side is holding its shape or being overrun, whether a player is limping, whether the tempo has collapsed — but you have to commit while the action carries on.
A third difference, less visible, lies in how the price is built. A pre-match market is refined over days; a live market is recalculated in seconds, several hundred times a match. That constraint of time shows up in the price on screen, and it does so at every operator.
The conclusion is straightforward: in play makes sense when you have seen something the market has not yet absorbed. Not when the point is simply to stake faster.
Following the action properly before you bet live
A decision made in play is worth what the information behind it is worth. Three things matter, in this order.
Watching the match rather than the score. A scoreboard tells you who is ahead, not who is on top.
