Sint-Truiden v Iberia: the Canaries enter the league phase
Eighteen months ago, Sint-Truiden were fighting to stay up. On Thursday 15 October at 21:00, the Limburg club host Georgian champions Iberia 1999 Tbilisi at Stayen in their first league-phase match of the Conference League.
Sint-Truiden v Iberia continues the European run of STVV, who finished third in the Jupiler Pro League last season and were already in action in the Europa League play-off round in August. Among the Conference League odds, it is one of two Belgian fixtures of the evening, at a time when the Canaries are going through a tougher start to the league season.
Sint-Truiden in the Conference League after a historic season
In spring 2025, Sint-Truiden were in the relegation play-offs and changed coach mid-season: Wouter Vrancken replaced Felice Mazzù, with survival as the only goal.
The 2025-26 season turned out very differently. In March, once qualification for the Champions Play-offs was secure, Vrancken reminded everyone: “All the experts had us in the Relegation Play-offs at the start of the season.” The Canaries eventually finished third, behind champions Club Brugge and Union Saint-Gilloise.
The club had not finished in the top-flight top three since 1965-66, when they were runners-up. With Union winning the Belgian Cup against Anderlecht, the European place reserved for the cup passed to the third-placed side in the league. Named Coach of the Year, Vrancken chose to leave at the end of the season and has been in charge of Heart of Midlothian in Scotland since June, a club that has also reached this league phase. His assistant Frédéric De Meyer was promoted to head coach.
From Omonia Nicosia to the league phase
Thursday is not the start of the European adventure. In August, Sint-Truiden faced Omonia Nicosia in the play-off round of the Europa League. After a 1-0 first-leg win at Stayen, the Canaries lost 4-2 in Nicosia in the second leg and dropped into the Conference League.
The draw handed them six opponents: Iberia Tbilisi, Brann and Ajax at Stayen, then trips to Midtjylland, as early as 22 October, Hajduk Split and Lugano. Thursday's visitors, formerly FC Saburtalo and renamed Iberia 1999 in 2024, have won the last two Georgian titles.
Iberia arrive by the same route. Knocked out by Slovan Bratislava in the Champions League second qualifying round, then by Jagiellonia Białystok in the Europa League play-off round (6-1 on aggregate), they too dropped into the Conference League. For both clubs it is a first European league phase: Iberia had never gone beyond the qualifying rounds, and Sint-Truiden's European experience before this summer was limited to the Intertoto Cup.
Sint-Truiden are not alone in the Conference League: Gent, the other Belgian side and unbeaten league leaders, host Aarhus on Thursday at 18:45.
Sint-Truiden v Iberia amid a difficult start
The contrast with last season is stark. After eight rounds, Sint-Truiden sit twelfth (standings on 12 October 2026) on 8 points: two wins, two draws and four defeats, with 15 goals scored and 16 conceded.
On Sunday, in round eight, the Canaries lost again, 4-3 away at Mechelen. The game against Iberia therefore comes at a time when Frédéric De Meyer's side are looking for consistency, with a defence that has conceded two goals a game on average over eight outings.
The format has changed too. Since this season there are no play-offs and no second phase: with eighteen clubs and a single 34-round race, a poor start can no longer be put right in spring, and every point counts from the autumn, including between two European nights.
Which markets for STVV v Iberia?
Sint-Truiden's numbers point to open games: 15 goals scored and 16 conceded in eight rounds, and seven more goals on Sunday at Mechelen. That profile gives extra weight to the 'both teams to score' market, offered alongside the match result, while the Golden Vegas Sport BetBuilder lets you combine several markets from this game in a single bet.
The game can also be bet on in-play, and that is where the matchday offer comes in: Golden Vegas Sport is running a BetXtra reserved for in-play bets on Sint-Truiden v Iberia, worth 25% and valid until Thursday 15 October at 23:00. Read its terms before you place a bet.
A bet placed during the game is still a bet: last season's success guarantees nothing against Georgian champions who are also starting their league phase, and your budget should be set before the evening starts, not mid-game. For the Canaries, the next test comes quickly, with a trip to Midtjylland on 22 October.
