Champions League: a must-win situation for our Jupiler Pro League clubs

And the whole of Belgium can finally breathe! During the third international break of the season, and also the last of the calendar year, your favourite Belgian sports betting site Golden Vegas Sport certainly felt the tension.

Not without a few scares for our Red Devils. The national team put their qualification at risk by losing against Kazakhstan (0–1). Fortunately, Rudi Garcia’s men recovered well, securing their ticket to the World Cup with a spectacular win over Liechtenstein (7–0).

A much-needed boost for the image of Belgian football — which could look even better if Union Saint-Gilloise and Club Brugge manage to qualify for the next round of the Champions League. And conveniently, both teams have a real opportunity this week, which we’re presenting to you in this blog.

Union cannot afford any mistakes in Turkey

Regrets — that’s the best way to describe Union Saint-Gilloise’s last Champions League match. The trip to Atlético Madrid was always going to be difficult. And yet David Hubert’s men came close to equalising with Louis Patris’ header.

Unaccustomed to finding himself in such a position, the full-back missed that crucial chance. As a result, the reigning Belgian champions now need to win at Galatasaray this Tuesday if they want to keep their qualification hopes alive.

And the least we can say is that Brussels are not considered favourites, with odds of 5.80 — a figure that may rise or fall as the match progresses if you bet live. Fresh from their league win over Cercle Brugge, can USG pull off the upset despite having collected only 3 points out of 12 in the Champions League? They have no choice.

Bruges must confirm

In Bruges, the two consecutive defeats in the most prestigious European competition had spoiled the promising start against Monaco, even though their Jupiler Pro League campaign has been impressive with their current second place. But the club from the Venice of the North returned to the right track with a spectacular draw against Barcelona (3–3), in which they arguably deserved the win.

They will absolutely need to build on that point away at Sporting Lisbon on Wednesday, where the Blauw en Zwart will meet Zeno Debast again — a former Anderlecht player and a current Red Devil. Here too, victory will be essential.

Whether in our physical betting shops or on our website, Bruges is rated at 4.55 and therefore isn’t considered favourite either, even though they won against Charleroi last weekend while resting Tzolis and Onyedika. Isn’t this the best opportunity of the week?

Other exciting fixtures

But it’s not only Belgian clubs in the Champions League! If you prefer foreign football, your Tuesday and Wednesday should be packed — the programme is rich and particularly appealing.

Beaten in Newcastle, Pep Guardiola’s Citizens will host Bayer Leverkusen, while PSG vs Tottenham will remind fans of the last UEFA Super Cup, where the French equalised in the final seconds before edging out the English side in a thrilling penalty shootout.

In full doubt in the Premier League — they’ve just lost at home at Anfield against Nottingham (0–3) — Liverpool’s Reds will have to wake up against PSV. Otherwise, a crisis may be looming.

But the other big match of the day is in England, where Vincent Kompany’s unbeaten Munich side will travel to Arsenal, leaders of the English league. On paper, a dream clash you simply cannot miss.
