Euvrard must finally win his first match
Life is far from a long, quiet river — especially at Standard. Many thought they were on track after their win against Genk on Matchday 3. But a month later, everything has changed at Sclessin.
Mircea Rednic suffered two defeats, one expected at Union and another humiliating at home against Cercle (0-3). That pushed sporting director Marc Wilmots to act and bring down the axe. The Romanian coach was fired.
"I love Mircea, he is a good coach, but at some point, we had to realize it wasn’t working. From there, we had to make a decision: either I stubbornly tried to prove I was right, or I admitted I was wrong and acted quickly, for the good of the club," explained the former Red Devil.
Standard then recruited Vincent Euvrard from Dender. And for his debut, the coach suffered a defeat at Leuven (1-0). He cannot afford another misstep in the Principality this Friday against Mechelen, or he will already face heavy pressure on his shoulders.
The former RWDM coach is ambitious, however, and didn’t hesitate to set big goals for the future. During his presentation, he even mentioned the Champions League.
"I came here to win. Top 6 is the target in the short term, then top 3, then the league title. People may call me a clown, but at RWDM we had no financial means, no team to become champions, but we did it. I’ve learned you have to be able to dream," he declared.
Before talking about titles, supporters would already be satisfied with three points against Mechelen. But that won’t be easy against the current third in the table, only three points behind the leader.

Hasi fighting for his job at Anderlecht
At the Mauves, the coach has not yet been replaced. But it may just be a matter of hours. To be honest, few believed Besnik Hasi would survive the elimination in Athens in the Conference League play-offs.
Nor the defeat, three days later, on Union’s pitch. But Anderlecht showed a better face against the reigning Belgian champions. It was always going to be difficult to take something after picking up two red cards.
"Are we still behind him? Yes, without hesitation. Besnik Hasi is our coach, and we are working together to improve. We are focused on that. We want to grow with him. I don’t check social media, I live in my own bubble and I don’t have time to speculate about whether the coach will stay," said Marco Kana in the mixed zone.
That did not calm the supporters, who protested outside Neerpede when the players returned from Union. Finally, president Wouter Vandenhaute announced his resignation.
That departure could trigger another. If Anderlecht lose again against Genk this Sunday, it is hard to see how Hasi could keep his job. But on the other side, the Limburgers are also struggling, sitting only eighth in the standings.
