Belgian Supercup: Will Union or Club Brugge lift the first trophy of the season?

They gave us a legendary show during the recent playoffs. After 10 crazy matchdays, Union Saint-Gilloise finished ahead of Club Brugge — winning their first Belgian championship title in the Jupiler Pro League after 90 years of waiting.

I’m just the coach who gets to experience this with the group, and that’s fantastic,” said Sébastien Pocognoli. “Many players are remembered, and I told my squad to be among those we’d never forget.

And indeed, the Brussels team will remain in the hearts of all neutral Pro League fans. While Club Brugge surrendered their crown, Nicky Hayen’s men showed great sportsmanship. “We no longer had our destiny in our hands, so all we can do is congratulate Union — they truly deserved it,” said Vanaken.

Two months after that intense battle, everything has settled. And this Sunday at 6:30 p.m., the Jan Breydel Stadium side will have the chance to take their revenge in the Belgian Supercup. In just a few weeks, everything has changed. Here's all the key info you need to bet with confidence on Golden Vegas Sport.

Pocognoli stays with Union

But who will win this first match that kicks off the new season? Unlike previous years, Union managed to keep its coach — a first in four years, since Felice Mazzù secured promotion to the Belgian Pro League and stunned the elite by finishing second in the table.

Despite interest, notably from Lens, Pocognoli opted for stability. “What was my thinking? Honestly, it was quite clear. I felt good at Union. And most importantly, I was certain we would keep aiming high,” he said.

Although his club is already qualified for the league stage of the next Champions League, while others are still fighting to join, the coach is not yet focused on Europe’s most prestigious competition.

To be honest, I’m not thinking about it. The trap would be to look too far ahead. I didn’t stay just for the Champions League — that would mean neglecting everything else. Right now, the Belgian Supercup and the league start are what really matter.

The first one without Anthony Moris

What did change — and what no one expected — is the departure of iconic goalkeeper Anthony Moris. A fixture between the posts for five seasons, the Luxembourg international had attracted attention.

Nice came first. And as he prepared to play in the Champions League for the first time in his career — after having endured unemployment and injuries — the 35-year-old keeper gave priority to the financial offer over the sporting one.

With one year left on his Union contract, he managed to multiply his salary tenfold by answering the call from Saudi side Al-Khaleej, signing a two-year deal. Replacing him will be 22-year-old Vic Chambaere. Will he be able to keep a clean sheet in the first major clash of his career?

Will Giger or Campbell open their account?

The reigning Belgian champion also lost Noah Sadiki, who joined Sunderland, and Casper Terho — a less significant departure — who signed with Leuven. However, Adem Zorgane arrived from Charleroi, marking a major move by the club’s management.

Less known, young Swiss forward Marc Giger came to strengthen the attack. At just 20 years old and arriving from Schaffhausen, a team playing in the Swiss second division, patience will be required — but he already impressed with a stunning lobbed goal in a friendly. Will he repeat that feat in an official match on Sunday?

On the other side, Club Brugge made their best transfer move by keeping Ardon Jashari despite a €30 million offer from AC Milan. The Blauw en Zwart sold Chemsdine Talbi to Sunderland, but brought in Carlos Forbs from Ajax.

The Portuguese winger will likely be unavailable to start this weekend — great news for Shandre Campbell. The 18-year-old South African earned his stripes last season with Club NXT in the Challenger Pro League. He is expected to get his debut. Will he score? Who will be the hero and find the back of the net? Your guess is as good as ours.
